Jesus plaintively quoted from Psalm 22 as he suffered such cruelty on the cross and drew the attention of those crucifying him to the fulfilment of this amazing prophecy and description of a crucifixion hundreds of years before.

Such a cruel death had been invented by the Greeks and used for the purpose of shock and horror in subduing nations by the Romans. The Psalm describes the reproach, the ridicule, the mockery His thirst, disjointed bones and the nailing of His hands and feet.

The gruesome image of His bones out of joint and the soldiers indifferently gambling for His clothes

The Psalmist provides further prophetic detail:

“The ploughers ploughed on my back; They made their furrows long.”

Psalms 129:3

What would be the outcome of such an ignominious death? Again the fulfilled prophecy that the gospel would go global around the world. Remember, you are reading this TODAY in fulfilment.

All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the Lord,

Psalms 22:27

And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You.

A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,

they will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born,

that He has done this.

Psalms 22:30

It is consistent throughout the Old Testament that after Jesus is crucified, that the gospel would be universally preached throughout the world to the gentiles [non-jewish people]. In fact, Jesus instructed a few humble fishermen to make it happen and then empowered them to do it.

A billion people will testify to the fulfilment of this prophecy. There are other religions that are worldwide, but none have the proof of fulfilled prophecy. Prophecy is still being fulfilled today in a more miraculous way, but that is for another time.
